In this article I hope I can help you understand how easy, fun, and fast it is to cross from San Ysidro into Tijuana on a motorcycle.
If you are planning to make this border crossing and you are from the United States, I would recommend making sure your motorcycle is in good repair unless you are familiar with mechanics in Mexico. Don’t bring in any guns or drugs and start heading south!
Traffic levels vary going into Mexico. Friday afternoon and holidays attract a lot of 4-wheeled vehicles, but this does not appear to be a a problem for motorcycles. See video below for an example of a busy crossing:
Motorcycles can pretty much ‘get in where they fit in’ and cars are generally very relaxed about letting motorcycles pass. There are two bottle necks where it is hard to slide by cars, but even in these narrow channels, it is quite possible. A little bit of patience may be required at the second bottle neck where a flash appears to be a camera taking your pictures, but after making it through that area, your motorcycle will become quite useful for cutting through congested traffic of busy Tijuana.
Border guards have never stopped me on my motorcycle, but be prepared and have a passport just in case. It hard to imagine having to wait a couple hours in the car after you have had the high that comes from passing thousands of cars in less than 5 minutes.
