Setting goals without expecting the results to be successful is a powerful concept. Expectations for the goal can often get in the way of moving towards the goal by polluting the mind. If the goal is achieved, lack of expectation can make “success” a grateful experience rather than an entitled one.
There are times, however, when throwing out expectations for a goal can lead to serious consequences. Today in Fairbanks, Alaska it is hovering just below -40 degrees F. Expecting cold and severe consequences for a car breaking down, a heater running out of fuel, or pipes freezing are realities than cannot be ignored.
With temperature related expectations, consequences of failure may dictate the need to complete a goal or not set one at all. This is a sobering reality that shakes some of the modern philosophies permeating social media and Yoga Studios. Goals without expectation may lead to some great work, creativity, and a calm mind, but do not forget that this philosophy is somewhat of a luxury in our comfortable modern society.
