Its cold, dark, and Tanana Lakes Recreation Area is open for ice skating and ice fishing! The recreation area is located in South Fairbanks and is open to the public.
I have been very impressed with the maintenance of the ice rink and ice track. The 1.5 miles track is usually clean of snow and very smooth for a natural ice surface. My favorite activity is skating laps while listening to metal music and taking breaks to do pushups and situps on the ice. I often have the ice all to myself making for a very peaceful winter exercise activity.
Ice fishing is also open to the public and there have been people actively fishing every time I have visited the recreation area this winter. The roads and parking lots have been plowed regularly while skiers often pass through the trails running through the park.
